Forkyndelse og forfølgelse i Korinth

v1 Derpå forlod Paulus Athen og kom til Korinth. v2 Dér mødte han en jøde, som hed Akvila, og som stammede fra Pontus. Sammen med sin hustru Priskilla var han for nylig kommet fra Italien på grund af Claudius' påbud om, at alle jøder skulle forlade Rom. De to sluttede Paulus sig til, v3 og da de havde samme håndværk, blev han hos dem og arbejdede; de var nemlig teltmagere af fag. v4 Og hver eneste sabbat førte Paulus samtaler i synagogen og søgte at overbevise både jøder og grækere.

v5 Da Silas og Timotheus kom oppe fra Makedonien, var Paulus fuldt optaget af forkyndelsen og vidnede for jøderne, at Jesus er Kristus. v6 Men de stillede sig afvisende og spottede. Da rystede Paulus støvet af sin kappe og sagde: »Jeres blod kommer over jeres eget hoved. Jeg er uden skyld. Fra nu af går jeg til hedningerne.«

v7 Så forlod han synagogen og gik ind til Titius Justus, en gudfrygtig mand, hvis hus stødte op til synagogen. v8 Men synagogeforstanderen Krispus og alle i hans hus kom til tro på Herren. Også mange af korintherne hørte og troede og blev døbt. v9 Og Herren sagde til Paulus i et syn om natten: »Frygt ikke! Men tal, og ti ikke, for jeg er med dig, v10 og ingen skal lægge hånd på dig og gøre dig fortræd; for jeg har et talstærkt folk i denne by.« v11 Så boede Paulus dér i halvandet år og underviste om Guds ord iblandt dem.

v12 Men mens Gallio var statholder i Akaja, vendte jøderne sig alle som én imod Paulus, førte ham for domstolen v13 og påstod: »Denne mand søger at overtale folk til at ære Gud på en måde, som strider mod loven.« v14 Da Paulus skulle til at tage ordet, sagde Gallio til jøderne: »Hvis der var tale om en forbrydelse eller en grov slyngelstreg, jøder, så ville jeg naturligvis tage jeres klage til følge; v15 men gælder det uenighed om lære, navne og jeres egen lov, bliver det jeres sag. Den slags vil jeg ikke være dommer over.« v16 Så jog han dem væk fra domstolen. v17 Da greb de alle fat i synagogeforstanderen Sosthenes og slog løs på ham foran domstolen. Men intet af dette tog Gallio sig af.

Paulus' besøg i Jerusalem og Antiokia

v18 Paulus blev der endnu en tid. Så tog han afsked med brødrene og sejlede til Syrien sammen med Priskilla og Akvila. Forinden havde han ladet sit hår klippe af i Kenkreæ, for han havde aflagt et løfte. v19 Da de kom til Efesos, lod Paulus de andre blive tilbage og gik selv hen i synagogen og førte samtaler med jøderne. v20 De bad ham blive der i længere tid; det afslog han, v21 men da han brød op, sagde han: »Jeg kommer tilbage til jer, om Gud vil.« Så sejlede han fra Efesos v22 og kom til Cæsarea, og da han havde været oppe at hilse på menigheden i Jerusalem, tog han til Antiokia.

v23 Efter nogen tids forløb drog Paulus ud igen. Han rejste fra sted til sted gennem det galatiske land og Frygien og styrkede alle disciplene.

Apollos i Efesos

v24 En jøde, der hed Apollos, og som stammede fra Alexandria, kom til Efesos. Han havde ordet i sin magt og var stærk i Skrifterne. v25 Han var blevet oplært i Herrens vej, og med ildhu talte og underviste han udførligt om Jesus, skønt han kun havde kendskab til Johannes' dåb. v26 Han begyndte nu frimodigt at tale i synagogen. Da Priskilla og Akvila hørte ham, tog de ham med sig og forklarede ham Guds vej mere udførligt. v27 Apollos ville gerne rejse videre til Akaja, og brødrene skrev til disciplene dér og tilskyndede dem til at tage imod ham. Han ankom dertil og blev ved Guds nåde til stor hjælp for de troende. v28 For han tilbageviste offentligt jøderne med stor kraft og påviste ud fra Skrifterne, at Jesus er Kristus.

Preaching and persecution in Corinth
v1 Then Paul left Athens and came to Corinth. v2 There he met a Jew named Aquila, who came from Pontus. With his wife Priscilla, he had recently come from Italy because of Claudius' edict that all Jews should leave Rome. Paul joined the two, v3 and since they had the same trade, he stayed with them and worked; they were tentmakers by trade. v4 And every Sabbath Paul held discussions in the synagogue, trying to convince both Jews and Greeks.

v5 When Silas and Timothy came up from Macedonia, Paul was fully occupied with the preaching and testified to the Jews that Jesus is the Christ. v6 But they stood rejecting and mocking. Then Paul shook the dust off his cloak and said: "Your blood will be on your own head." I am without fault. From now on I will go to the Gentiles.'

v7 Then he left the synagogue and went in to Titius Justus, a godly man whose house adjoined the synagogue. v8 But Crispus, the ruler of the synagogue, and everyone in his house believed in the Lord. Many of the Corinthians also heard and believed and were baptized. v9 And the Lord said to Paul in a vision at night: "Do not be afraid! But speak, and do not be silent, for I am with you, v10 and no one will lay hands on you and do you harm; for I have a great number of people in this city." v11 Then Paul lived there for a year and a half and taught the word of God among them.

v12 But while Gallio was governor of Achaia, the Jews all turned against Paul as one, brought him to court v13 and claimed: "This man is trying to persuade people to honor God in a way that is contrary to the law." v14 When Paul was about to speak, Gallio said to the Jews: "If it was a crime or a gross mischief, Jews, I would of course accept your complaint; v15 but if there is disagreement about doctrine, names and your own law, that will be your business. I don't want to be a judge of that sort of thing." v16 Then he chased them away from the court. v17 Then they all seized the ruler of the synagogue, Sosthenes, and attacked him in front of the court. But none of this bothered Gallio.

Paul's visit to Jerusalem and Antioch
v18 Paul stayed there another time. Then he took leave of the brothers and sailed to Syria with Priscilla and Aquila. Before that he had had his hair cut off in Cenchrea, because he had made a vow. v19 When they arrived at Ephesus, Paul left the others behind and went himself to the synagogue and held discussions with the Jews. v20 They asked him to stay there longer; he refused, v21 but when he broke up, he said: "I will come back to you, God willing." Then he sailed from Ephesus v22 and came to Caesarea, and when he had been up to greet the congregation in Jerusalem, he went to Antioch.

v23 After some time had passed, Paul went out again. He traveled from place to place through the land of Galatia and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples.

Apollos in Ephesus
v24 A Jew named Apollos, who came from Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He had the word in his power and was strong in the Scriptures. v25 He had been trained in the way of the Lord, and with fervor he spoke and taught extensively about Jesus, although he only knew of John's baptism. v26 He now began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him with them and explained to him the way of God more fully. v27 Apollos wanted to go on to Achaia, and the brothers wrote to the disciples there, urging them to receive him. He arrived there and by God's grace became a great help to the believers. v28 For he publicly refuted the Jews with great force and proved from the Scriptures that Jesus is the Christ.
